Dr Mary C. McKenna is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She is a leading expert on energy metabolism in the brain. Her research interests include lactate trafficking between astrocytes and neurons, regulation of malate-aspartate shuttle activity, neuronal and glial energy metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis in brain. Her research focuses on alterations in metabolism in pathological conditions including perinatal hypoxia/ischaemia, traumatic brain injury in immature brain, and fragile X syndrome.
